Oli Herbert

Updated: May 4

Oli Herbert began playing guitar at the age of 14, describing himself as a “lone metalhead” during his early years. His first paid performance came with his high‑school band during a Battle of the Bands event on the final day of his senior year. They placed third — earning a grand total of $25.

He fell in love with metal in 1986, gravitating toward bands like Mötley Crüe, Dokken, and Ozzy Osbourne. As he grew more serious about guitar, he also became drawn to the thrash scene, especially Megadeth and Metallica. Outside of metal, Oli cited Beethoven as one of his strongest classical influences.

Before touring took over his life, Oli spent many years teaching guitar, helping countless students develop their technique and musical identity.

In 2009, his instructional program for Rockhouse earned him the award for Instructional DVD of the Year, highlighting his reputation not just as a performer but as an educator.

Oli held an associate’s degree in Classical and Jazz Guitar, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Music Composition — a background that shaped his melodic, intricate approach to metal guitar.

He became a founding member of the metalcore band All That Remains, helping define their sound from the very beginning and contributing to their rise within the genre.

Oli Herbert died on October 17th, 2018. The investigation into his death remains ongoing.
